Cursor has become one of the fastest-growing startups in the AI market

In 2025, one of the most talked-about startups in the artificial intelligence market has been Anysphere and its AI-powered coding tool Cursor.

According to Startup.az, citing Forbes, the startup’s four co-founders — who were university students just a few years ago — have now become billionaires.

Cursor helps programmers write code, detect errors, optimize code, and manage large projects more efficiently using artificial intelligence. The platform quickly gained popularity thanks to its ability to significantly improve developer productivity.

The startup behind the platform, Anysphere, recently raised $2.3 billion in its latest investment round, increasing the company’s valuation to $29.3 billion.

As a result, the company’s co-founders — Michael Truell, Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark — have officially reached billionaire status. Each owns a 4.5% stake in the company, with the value of those shares exceeding $1 billion.

A project born at MIT

All four co-founders studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Their first project focused on building an AI-powered system for mechanical engineers, but the idea failed to gain traction.

The team later decided to create a next-generation working environment for programmers, which eventually led to the development of Cursor.

Millions of users worldwide

According to Forbes, millions of developers are already using Cursor. Its corporate clients include major companies such as NVIDIA, Adobe, Uber, Shopify, and PayPal.

The report states that around 50,000 teams use the platform in their daily workflows. The company’s annual revenue has reportedly surpassed $1 billion, making Cursor one of the fastest-growing AI startups in history.

“AI wrapper” criticism

Despite its success, the company has also faced criticism within the tech community. Discussions on Reddit and developer forums suggest that one of the platform’s main risks is its lack of ownership over a foundational AI model.

Critics argue that Cursor relies heavily on models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. Because of this, some experts describe the platform as an “AI wrapper” — a product built on top of existing AI models.

Supporters, however, believe the real value lies not only in the AI model itself, but also in user experience and workflow integration. This, they argue, is the reason why Cursor has become an essential daily tool for developers in such a short time.

Future plans

The article notes that Anysphere has already begun developing its own AI systems. The company recently introduced a model called “Composer” and aims to reduce its dependence on third-party AI providers in the future.

Analysts believe that if this strategy succeeds, Cursor could evolve from a simple AI add-on into a fully independent AI platform. The company’s main competitors are expected to include GitHub Copilot and other major AI coding tools.

What started as a university project just a few years ago has now become one of the most discussed ventures in the global technology industry. Experts say the success of Cursor also highlights a broader trend in the AI market — the next generation of highly valuable tech companies may come not only from giant corporations, but also from agile startups built by small teams.
