American investor: Baku’s startup ecosystem is developing and can integrate into global markets
Azerbaijan’s capital is gradually strengthening its position on the map of regional innovation ecosystems.
According to Startup.az, this was stated by Ryan Wang, a San Francisco–based investor and partner at the venture capital funds Outpost Capital and Solaris Venture Partners, in an exclusive interview with Azertag. We present the interview below.
– How do you assess Baku’s startup ecosystem, and what could help it integrate more quickly into global innovation chains?
– Baku’s startup ecosystem is at an early stage of development, but it is already showing noticeable progress. Government support plays an important role, and interest among entrepreneurs is steadily increasing. For faster integration into global innovation chains, the participation of international capital, engagement of experienced professionals as mentors, the formation of successful exit mechanisms, and closer cooperation with global corporations and accelerators are essential.
– Which areas of digitalization in Azerbaijan appear most promising for venture investment?
– In my opinion, the application of artificial intelligence in public services, security devices and payment solutions, the digitalization of logistics and trade, energy optimization, and the development of smart infrastructure are the most promising areas. These directions align well with Azerbaijan’s economic structure and are not limited to the local market, offering strong potential for regional expansion.
– What role can the private sector play in shaping the venture ecosystem?
– Large corporate groups can serve as anchor institutions within the ecosystem. They can act as startups’ first customers, strategic partners, co-investors, and limited partners. More importantly, they can help startups test products faster, shorten sales cycles, and create real exit opportunities through M&A transactions.
– In the context of Silicon Valley, can Baku become a regional innovation hub?
– Yes, such potential exists. Baku has unique geographical and cultural advantages, connecting Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. To succeed, it is important to focus on cross-border relevance, attract international talent, and position the city not only as a domestic ecosystem but as a neutral hub for collaboration.
– In which areas do you see the greatest opportunities for technological and economic cooperation between the United States and Azerbaijan?
– The greatest opportunities lie in artificial intelligence, energy transition, climate and infrastructure technologies, security devices, cybersecurity, and applied enterprise software. American partners bring technology and broader development experience, while Azerbaijan offers regional access, testing environments, and a strategic location. This creates a sustainable model for mutually beneficial cooperation.
